Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Fett’s expertise as a Fellowship Trained Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon qualifies him to perform some of the most difficult and delicate eyelid procedures. In fact, many patients who had “learned to live” with certain eyelid conditions and defects have benefited from Dr. Fett’s advanced corrective surgical techniques. Advanced Reconstructive Surgery at the Fett Laser Center can correct many conditions and diseases of the eye such as:

Drooped Eyelids and Brows (Ptosis)
Children are often born with this condition. The surgery is also performed on accident victims. Most commonly it is performed on men and women whose eyelids start to droop with age. Depending on the severity of the problem, it may interfere with normal eyesight.

Eyelid Reconstruction and Repositioning
Because of aging, accidents, or other problems, upper and/or lower eyelids may turn inward, causing eyelashes to rub on the eyeball. This causes pain and reduced vision. Occasionally, the eyelids, especially the lower lids, may turn outward, away from the eyeball. This causes eyes to dry out, which can be painful, and may cause tears to run down the cheek, rather than drain away normally.

Tumors
This type of reconstructive surgery involves the removal of any kind of benign or cancerous growth from around or behind the eye, including skin cancers that frequently occur on or around the eyelid. Eyelids can be rebuilt so they look and function normally. More often than not, the eye can be saved, even when the eyelid is involved in a malignant tumor.

Surgical Treatment of Dry Burning Eyes (Canaliculoplasty)
This is a common problem in a dry climate, and can be extremely painful. It can often be treated medically with drops and ointments. When this therapy is not adequate, the tear drainage ducts can be closed off surgically, sustaining the tears and keeping the eye moist.

Thyroid Related Eye Surgery
Overactive thyroid disease sometimes causes the eyes to bulge out, giving them an awkward appearance. This is often accompanied by pain, tearing and redness. Usually the problems can be treated with medication or a combination of medication and surgery.

Artificial Eyes
Many people lose their eyes due to accidents, cancer, or birth defects. Reconstructive surgery is often needed to maintain an artificial eye, enabling the lid to move normally over it and allowing it to stay in the proper position.
